Punjab’s Public Schools Enter the Age of Digital Accountability

Gone are the days of paper registers and unchecked absences — Punjab has just changed the rules of the game for every teacher and student in its public school system.

The Punjab government has rolled out a landmark directive making digital attendance mandatory for all public schools across the province. Both students and teachers are now required to record their presence through an online system — a bold step aimed at rooting out negligence and bringing greater transparency to the education sector.

Under the new policy, anyone who fails to mark their attendance digitally will be automatically treated as absent — no exceptions. Schools that consistently fail to update the School Information System (SIS) have been warned of strict disciplinary consequences.

Who Is Responsible?

District Education Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) have been placed at the frontline of enforcement, tasked with ensuring full compliance across their jurisdictions. Meanwhile, head teachers will be held directly accountable for any lapses at the school level—making it clear that there is no room for negligence up or down the chain.

The Deadline That Cannot Be Missed

The provincial education secretary has raised serious concern over delays in uploading student admission and attendance data, demanding that all pending entries be completed by April 20, 2026 — without fail.

Consequences Are Real

Officials have made it clear that missing or inaccurate data could trigger action under the Punjab Employees Efficiency, Discipline, and Accountability Act—a warning that carries serious professional consequences for those who ignore the directive.

Eyes on the Ground

To back up the policy with action, surprise inspections by monitoring teams will be carried out regularly, ensuring that compliance is not just on paper but in practice.

This initiative marks a significant chapter in Punjab’s push toward digital governance, signaling that the era of unchecked absenteeism and data manipulation in public schools may finally be coming to an end.
