LAHORE – September 2025: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved a new Smart Waste Management Project to improve cleanliness and promote eco-friendly habits in schools across the province.

Five Colored Bins in Schools
Under this project, five different colored bins will be placed in both public and private schools. Each bin will be used for a different type of waste so that garbage can be properly separated and recycled.
The deadline for schools to install these bins is September 30, and inspections will begin on October 1. Schools that fail to follow the rules will face fines.
Who Will Oversee the Project?
The initiative will be supervised by Senior Provincial Minister for Environment Maryam Aurangzeb. Education Minister Rana Sikandar and Local Government Minister Zeeshan Malik have been given clear targets to make sure the plan is fully implemented.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has already issued a formal notice. According to the guidelines, the collected waste will be recycled to reduce garbage and promote sustainable practices.
Support for Schools
The Local Government and Community Development Department will manage the distribution of colored bins, while the EPA will handle strict monitoring and inspections in schools.
Schools that successfully meet the required standards will receive certificates from the EPA as recognition of their efforts.
For additional help, schools can also contact the Punjab Management Helpline (1139) to arrange waste collection services.
A Step Toward a Cleaner Punjab
This new initiative aims to not only keep schools clean but also teach students the importance of waste segregation and environmental protection. Authorities believe that starting with educational institutions will help spread eco-friendly habits across the province.
Punjab’s Smart Waste Management project is a major step toward creating a cleaner and greener future for students and communities alike.
